Eczema

Eczema

Background to eczema

Eczema is a skin condition where the barrier (protective) function of the skin is disrupted. There are a wide range of causes, with some genetic links, and often links to exposure to things that cause an allergic-type reaction.

What is the impact of eczema?

At its simplest level, eczema causes dryness, itching, and inflammation (redness and often soreness) of the skin. Commonly affected areas include the elbow creases and behind the knees, although it can present in other areas too. The symptoms can come and go, but in more severe cases, the symptoms may be continuous.

Other problems that can lead on from eczema include:

  • Risk of infection, because the skin often breaks, allowing a route for the bacteria that normally live on the skin to travel deeper into the skin layers.
  • Issues with self-confidence and other mental health-related issues.
  • Sleep disturbance due to itching.
  • Links to other allergy-related conditions such as hay fever and asthma are more common in eczema patients, so while eczema may not cause them, it is important to be aware that they may be more likely.

Treatments

  • All dry skin conditions should be treated with “emollients” (moisturisers), both as an initial treatment, but also as an ongoing maintenance treatment:
    • Where possible, opt for a non-perfumed medical moisturiser.
    • These can generally be purchased over-the-counter- please call the pharmacy on 01249 793600 if you would like to purchase one.
  • If you have already tried moisturisers, would like a more in-depth discussion about eczema treatments, or suspect that the eczema may be infected, then please book an appointment below with one of our clinicians.
    • Our clinicians may prescribe medications for more persistent or severe eczema symptoms, if they feel it is appropriate.
