What is Meningitis B?
Meningococcal group B (MenB) disease is a rare but potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that can cause:
- Meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord)
- Septicaemia (blood poisoning)
Although uncommon, MenB can develop rapidly and can become life-threatening within hours. Even with prompt treatment, it can lead to permanent disabilities including hearing loss, brain injury or limb amputations.
Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce your risk.
Why are university students at higher risk?
Students are more likely to come into close contact with large numbers of people during the first weeks of university.
Living in shared accommodation, attending social events and mixing with new friendship groups all increase the spread of meningococcal bacteria.
Recent outbreaks of MenB among university students have led the NHS to introduce a vaccination programme to help protect eligible young people before they start university.
Who is eligible?
The NHS MenB vaccination is available for eligible students who meet the national criteria.
You may be eligible if you are:
- Entering university or residential further education for the first time.
- Within the NHS age eligibility criteria.
- Eligible under the current NHS MenB vaccination programme.
Our healthcare team will confirm your eligibility before vaccination.
How many doses are needed?
The vaccination course consists of two doses.
- Dose 1 – given at your first appointment.
- Dose 2 – given at least 4 weeks later.
For the best protection, both doses should ideally be completed before you begin university.
What happens during your appointment?
Your appointment usually takes around 5-10 minutes.
During your visit we will:
- Check your eligibility.
- Complete a short health questionnaire.
- Discuss the vaccine and answer any questions.
- Administer the vaccine.
- Advise you about possible side effects and aftercare.
Most people can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
Possible side effects
Like all vaccines, the MenB vaccine can cause mild side effects.
The most common include:
- Soreness or redness at the injection site
- Mild swelling
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Muscle aches
- Mild fever
These usually settle within a day or two.
Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare and our trained vaccinators are fully equipped to manage them.
