Keep Antibiotics Working

Antibiotics are vital medicines used to treat bacterial infections and save lives. However, when antibiotics are used incorrectly, bacteria can adapt and become resistant. This means antibiotics may not work when we really need them.

As part of the NHS England Public Health Campaign running from 3 August to 28 August 2026, Chippenham Pharmacy and Health Clinic is supporting the message: Keep Antibiotics Working.

Antibiotics do not treat colds or flu

Colds, flu and many sore throats are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, so they will not help you recover from a viral illness.

Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can cause side effects and contributes to antibiotic resistance.

How you can help

There are three simple things everyone can do:

1. Do not take antibiotics for colds or flu

These illnesses are caused by viruses, not bacteria, so antibiotics will not help.

2. Never save antibiotics for later

Leftover antibiotics may not be suitable for a future illness and could be harmful.

3. Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed

If your GP, nurse, pharmacist or prescriber gives you antibiotics, follow the instructions carefully.

Why antibiotic resistance matters

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest global health challenges. If antibiotics stop working, infections become harder to treat and everyday healthcare becomes riskier.

Using antibiotics responsibly helps protect them for you, your family and future generations.
