Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI or “water infection”)

Background to urinary tract infection (UTI or “water infection”)

UTIs generally occur when bacteria from poo are introduced to the bladder via the urethra (the tube that wee flows down from the bladder to leave the body). They are much more common in women due to the shorter urethra, although men can also get them.

What is the impact of a UTI?

UTIs cause symptoms such as pain when weeing, having to wee more frequently and with less warning, lower tummy and back pain, and changes to the urine. They can be very uncomfortable, although may not always stop people from carrying on with their day-to-day life.

In rare cases, UTIs may progress to a kidney infection that is more serious and requires more intensive treatment- our clinicians will ask questions to check for this.
